CANON INFORMATION

CHARACTER NAME: James Griffin
CANON: Voltron: Legendary Defender
HISTORY: Here!

STRENGTHS:
+diligent James is an incredibly driven person. Everything he does in his life is done in order to get to the top. Best grades of the school, best pilot of his year - James is almost always the one in the lead. He's naturally talented, but his achievements are all founded in the hard work that he puts into realizing his potential. If there is something he wants to achieve, James is the kind of person who will put absolutely everything into reaching that goal.

+principled James has a deep respect for order and hierarchy. He's good at fitting into rigid structures and following orders. Even before he enters a military organization, James is already perfectly suited for soldier discipline. If you need rules followed or something done by the book, James is your guy. Only very seldom he breaks protocol to do what he perceives as morally the right thing.
When it comes to superiors, James feels a deep respect. The idea of being rude to someone of higher rank pretty much horrifies him. So he comes off as a very polite young man.

+a natural leader James is good at bringing groups of people together. He's amiable and by complimenting people's skills he tends to bring out the best in them. To people on his side, James is a supportive and attentive friend. This makes him pretty popular.
Further he's good at coordinating groups and reacts quickly to new situations. He's also loyal to his teams and would take risks to ensure every person in his group makes it through a mission unharmed.

FLAWS:
+pride James is arrogant. He's incredibly proud of everything he does and definitely thinks of himself as an awesome guy. This sometimes hinders himself from understanding when he is out of his depth and needs to consult someone else's expertise. He hates being seen as someone flawed, so accepting help isn't easy to him. Neither is apologizing. Rather than admit he was wrong, James would like pretend his wrongdoing never happened and prove himself via making up for it with uncommented favors.
His stuck-up attitude also does shine through in conversation from time to time. Knowing him for a while, you'll definitely get the conclusion that he's full of himself.

+jealousy Because James is so prideful, he reacts badly when somebody else is more talented than him. He then latches onto every idea he can think of why the other person is undeserving of their success - and he isn't afraid to let them know as much. Though his verbal insults mellow out as he grows older, the underlying feeling of jealousy remains a core part of his character. James still doesn't have an easy time accepting a peer's success when it surpasses his own.

+bluntness James can be very direct when telling people what he thinks they're doing wrong. This isn't only limited to quips made out of jealousy, he's also very vocal about the rules and how he feels people should follow them. When he corrects people, James doesn't sugar-coat his words. This makes him come across as rude or uncaring from time to time.

CANON ABILITIES: No supernatural abilities whatsoever. James is just a smart kid, a hard worker and a good pilot.

AU INFORMATION

AU CHARACTER NAME: James Griffin
AGE: 18
GRADE: Undergraduate
AU BACKSTORY:
James is born as the only child of the Griffin family, which resides in a small town in Arizona, USA. The Griffins are deeply involved with a Rune Guard guild named Garrison, which operates across the USA. James' father is an influential member of the Garrison and from an early age on he raises James to follow in his footsteps. This means that James grows up with full awareness of the supernatural. It throws a bit of a wedge between him and other children. James is always acutely conscious of the fact that he knows more than others and it causes a feeling of superiority that ingrains itself into his personality.

Though his family gives James lessons about the supernatural from an early age on, they largely let him grow up in a mundane environment and place a lot of stock on his grades in school. It's very clear from the beginning on that James' father won't help him into the Garrison - he has to prove himself worthy on every level all on his own. Thus James quickly grows into a people-pleaser and teacher's pet, always giving his best to stay on top of class. He's popular with classmates as well.

In 6th grade, their class gets a new transfer named Keith. James initially tries to approach the new kid (read: flaunt how good a person he is), but he's quickly rejected. This leaves him sour, but he moves on from it.... until 7th grade, when he overhears his father in a meeting with other Garrison officials.
The Garrison is always in search of members with an exceptional talent for driving and piloting various vehicles, as they believe that this talent will carry over to rune armor. In the meeting that James happens to hear a part of, the Garrison members discuss the possibly validity of Keith as a new recruit. His driving skills have stood out to James' father on accident and he's impressed with the natural control that Keith exhibits. James is horrified to hear that his emo kid classmate has caught his father's attention and leaves. (The part of the meeting that he doesn't hear contains various concerns about Keith's behavioral issues and how much of a drawback they are.)

James tells nobody of what he's heard as he doesn't want to admit to eavesdropping (and thus potentially be punished for it). So instead, he simply keeps what he's heard in mind and grows hyper-aware of all the ways Keith is talented where James has to put in more work. His jealousy makes James more prickly towards Keith and soon the two of them have developed mutual animosity.

When he's 14, James awakens his Flame and thus realizes he is a Candle. He takes great pride in this even if his power isn't very useful, but he takes secrecy seriously and doesn't share his secret with any of his friends or classmates. The option of sending James to Daybreak Academy immediately is discussed within the Griffin family, but in the end his father decides that James should finish high school among regular humans - get a real feeling for the world he is meant to protect for the rest of his life.

Thus James goes through the rest of his school life fairly normally. He continues putting a lot of effort into his studies, getting good grades, making friends and even getting a girlfriend, though the relationship is innocent and short-lived.

Towards the end of high school, James happens to be present when Keith discovers his own Flame. Now seeing that Keith is supernatural as well, James explains the basics of the world of Secret Societies to him and then dutifully reports Keith's ability to his father. This results in Keith being invited to Daybreak Academy for college together with James.

AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: This AU is largely structured to keep James' personality intact from canon, so a lot of the changes here are context-dependent. James' main interest is switched from being spacecraft piloting and space (canon) to a keen thirst for knowledge about the supernatural and a dream to one day pilot his own rune armor. He's also more strongly aware of impending threats to humanity than he is in canon - thus he is a bit more altruistic in nature from the get-go.

Further, the way he relates to other people has shifted a little. In canon James is one among equals who can put in the work and thus excel. In this AU, James is stuck between regular humans whom he feels inherently a bit superior to and people with inherent magical abilities that far surpass his own. He has a much harder time finding his place here and he's going to be struggling with this during his stay in the game.

RACE: Human (Candle)
SECRET SOCIETY: James isn't a member of any secret society yet, but his father is an influential member of the Rune Guard guild "Garrison". The Garrison operates in the desert regions of the United States and is strongly military in structure. Their primary goal is the protection of humans who have no affiliation with the supernatural whatsoever.

POWERS: James can hover up to 20 inches above the floor. That's it, that's his Flame. The floating is pretty steady and he can carry any object that he's physically able to pick up while doing it. He can also move around while floating, though only at walking pace. With training, he'll be able to eventually fly higher and faster.
Aside from that, he also has basic knowledge of runic inscription and could perform some of it, but he's not had a lot of practice.

HOUSING: Roommates with Keith, who is apping in alongside me, please!

INTERVIEW SAMPLE PROMPT

1. WHAT DO YOU MOST DESIRE FOR YOUR EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE?
[ Spoken while standing with a straight back and tense body, his best imitation of a soldier's body language: ]I want to be prepared for my future in the Rune Guard and facing the Nightfall. For that I want to learn all I can about Secret Societies and Outlands. Since a future after Nightfall is uncertain, I want to focus all of my energy and studies into averting this threat.

2. WHAT IS ESSENTIAL FOR A SCHOOL TO OFFER TO ITS STUDENTS?
An environment in which it is easy to focus on studying without distractions. Especially on a school with dorms, I think properly enforced campus etiquette is important. [ Not that he ever lived in a dorm.... but he has vague fears of people playing loud party music at night or something. ]

3. WHAT DO YOU FEEL MOST LIMITS YOU FROM ACHIEVING YOUR TRUE POTENTIAL?
[ There is a longer moment of silence here. ] I don't know. That's something I want to find out in my time at Daybreak Academy.
[ He can't explain to himself what holds him back when he puts 110% into everything he does. And yet, he knows he could be better... ]

4. WHAT COURSE WORK EXCITES YOU? WHY?
Practical work. No matter the subject, I enjoy doing something that yields tangible results and is a good test of our abilities in non-theoretical context.

5. WHAT COURSE WORK DO YOU DETEST MOST? WHY?
[ Immediately: ] I don't detest any course work. [ Then after a pause: ] I don't like exercises that are graded collectively instead of individually.

6. WHEN GIVEN FREE TIME, WHAT DO YOU DO WITH IT?
Well, I spend a lot of my time studying... but when that isn't necessary, I spend time with my friends. Going to the movies, the mall... Teenager things. We also studied together, though. [ Mostly before tests because James is the tutor you want to have. ]

7. WHEN UNDER PRESSURE OF A TIGHT DEADLINE, HOW DO YOU RESPOND?
I make a schedule for myself. I can't waste time panicking, I need to compartmentalize my time for the best possible results.

8. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR PEERS?
Their best efforts. I don't mind low grades if there is effort, but I can't stand it when people drag everyone else down by not applying themselves.

9. WHEN WORKING IN A GROUP, HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE TO ACHIEVE YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL?
That depends entirely on the group and the individual members' strengths and weaknesses. I'm usually the one assigning sub-tasks though, after we talked through our basic concept.

10. DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN RELY ON YOUR PEERS, OR DO YOU FEEL YOU MUST EXCEL ON YOUR OWN?
I don't think these two things are necessarily related, are they? Even if I can rely on my group, that isn't a reason to not try and excel on my individual part of the work.
